Environmental and Sustainability Manager — Role Overview

You will serve as the project's environmental lead, translating corporate sustainability goals into actionable site protocols and ensuring full compliance with Dutch environmental legislation. This position carries genuine authority—you will directly influence construction methods, train site teams, and hold stop-work powers when environmental standards are compromised.

Environmental and Sustainability Manager — Responsibilities

• Lead implementation of the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP), integrating client expectations with corporate sustainability objectives
• Review all construction method statements to ensure environmental risks are properly assessed and mitigated
• Deliver toolbox talks and hands-on guidance to site personnel on environmental best practices and required behaviours
• Train teams on environmental and social sensitivities, including protocols for public interaction
• Identify spill kit requirements, verify training completion, and ensure equipment maintenance and availability
• Conduct emergency preparedness exercises with H&S and Site Manager, identifying weaknesses and implementing improvements
• Monitor local NOx/NH3 emissions in compliance with the Dutch Nature Conservation Act (Wet natuurbescherming)
• Protect all drains and watercourse entry points, verifying clean water discharge and enforcing corrective action
• Maintain regular site presence to oversee medium- and high-risk environmental tasks and operations
• Perform routine site walkovers with the Site Manager, issuing written findings and agreeing corrective actions with realistic deadlines
• Produce monthly Environmental Progress Reports covering incidents, resolutions, inspections, and interventions
• Conduct permit audit checks and manage the site complaints register
• Promote best practice through lessons learned and incident feedback loops
• Attend client and project decision-making meetings as the environmental representative
• Exercise authority to stop works immediately where environmental non-compliance or unsafe practices are identified
• Review and maintain all project environmental permits, identifying gaps and updating documentation as required
• Coordinate with the Client's LEED practitioner, manage document collection, and support site inspections to achieve LEED Platinum certification

Environmental and Sustainability Manager — Ideal Candidate

Essential:
• Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline
• Minimum 7 years' experience in the construction sector
• Proven track record in site supervision and environmental compliance monitoring
• Demonstrable experience on high-tech, industrial, pharmaceutical, or data centre projects
• Strong communication, organisational, and reporting capabilities
• Ability to influence teams, challenge poor practice, and drive continuous improvement

Desirable:
• LEED accreditation or direct LEED project experience
• Dutch language skills
