Authorised Person — Role Overview
This internship provides practical experience in electrical safety and commissioning. You will contribute to the safe energisation and isolation of electrical systems, working under the guidance of senior personnel.
Authorised Person — Responsibilities
As an Authorised Person intern, you will:
- Become familiar with and enforce relevant SOPs, including Control of Hazardous Energies and Operating and Energisation Procedures.
- Adhere to Permit to Work and Lock-Out Tag-Out Procedures, following safe working practices.
- Review and understand Sub-Contractor COHE (Control of Hazardous Energies).
- Review and approve Sub-Contractor Electrical RAMS.
- Ensure all works are conducted according to client directives.
- Assist in the operational control of LOTO systems and safe switching during commissioning.
- Ensure warning signs are in place and checked regularly.
- Report any electrical incidents to SAP and Energy Marshall.
- Ensure the segregation of hazardous areas and the correct use of Electrical PPE.
- Successfully complete any required training.
- Identify potential hazards and implement mitigation measures.
- Secure areas under permit control.
- Assist Senior Authorised Persons in internal audits.
- Be conversant with Arc flash mitigation, including PPE selection.
- Authorise Energisation and Isolation Requests once criteria are met.
- Follow the instruction of the Senior Authorised Person.
- Provide evidence of successful completion of colour vision test.
Authorised Person — Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will:
- Be a qualified electrician with a National Craft Certificate or equivalent.
- Possess an electrical award equivalent to Level 6 or higher on the National Framework of Qualifications.
- Understand and interpret project drawings (SLDs, Wiring Diagrams, schematics).
- Understand EN and local code Regulations.
- Be conversant with latest local jurisdictional electrical regulations.
- Where required, have completed a recognised course in Verification, Testing and Certification.
- Be able to inspect, commission, troubleshoot associated control systems and power circuits and switchgear.
- Perform commissioning duties including MCC's, VSD's, distribution panels, motors, lighting, and small power circuits.
- Demonstrate understanding of policies and work methods for commissioning electrical equipment.
- Understand and interpret project documentation (Punchlist Procedure, As Built Procedure, Vendor Manuals).
- Perform testing (Insulation Resistance, Point to Point, grounding) with knowledge of testing equipment.
- Take live readings (Phase rotation, voltage level) and record on energisation request form.
- Perform and demonstrate Live Dead Live testing as required.
- Perform panel inspections and complete ‘Pre Energisation Checklists’.
- Execute switching schedules/notes post approval from the SAP and Energy Marshall.
- Perform safe energisations, isolations, and functional switching.
- Ensure correct tags are applied to all equipment awaiting energisation.
- Assist within the Commissioning process from Level 1 through to Level 5.
- Enforce the Electrical Permit to Work system, approve/cancel/close electrical safety related permits.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with site supervisors, peer workers, and vendors.
- Review commissioning processes.
- Assist in electrical incident investigations.
- Monitor the condition of PPE and safety equipment.
- Have completed a recognised MV/HV switching course if being appointed as an MV Authorised Person.
- Have worked on MV systems for a minimum of three years.
- Site management of the "In Progress" snagging system, ensuring safe and controlled works.
- Report any electrical events to SAP.
- Issue internal weekly progress reports to the SAP.
- Ensure timely, clear, and precise communications to the SAP and CxA regarding switching operations.
- Ensure any concerns and updates are offered to the Person in Charge of an Electrical Installation and Senior Engineer.
- Demonstrated history of delivering HV/MV Infrastructure projects, DC / DNO / IDNO / Power Generation (If being appointed as an Authorised Person for MV, be familiar with LV infrastructure and equipment if being nominated as an Authorised Person for LV).
- Experience managing work and safety precautions across control boundaries.
- Experience performing / supervising advance cable works including phasing, testing, identifying & spiking (Spiking is a specialist skill requiring a licence in many jurisdictions, it may not be required as essential but experience of, and being conversant with the process is essential)
