Authorised Person — Role Overview
This Authorised Person internship provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in electrical safety and operational control within a construction environment. You will contribute to ensuring safe working practices and compliance with electrical regulations.
Authorised Person — Responsibilities
As an Authorised Person Intern, you will:
- Become familiar with and enforce relevant SOPs, including Control of Hazardous Energies and Operating/Energisation Procedures.
- Adhere to Permit to Work and Lock-Out Tag-Out Procedures.
- Review and approve Sub-Contractor Electrical RAMS.
- Ensure all works are conducted in accordance with client directives.
- Maintain operational control of LOTO systems and safe switching during commissioning.
- Ensure warning signs are in place and checked regularly.
- Report electrical incidents to SAP and Energy Marshall.
- Ensure segregation of hazardous areas and proper use of Electrical PPE.
- Identify potential hazards and implement mitigation measures.
- Authorise Energisation and Isolation Requests (within nominated voltage range).
Authorised Person — Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will:
- Have successfully obtained a suitable electrical award, equivalent to Level 6 or higher on the National Framework of Qualifications.
- Be a qualified electrician awarded the National Craft Certificate (or equivalent in the jurisdiction, verified by Naric).
- Understand and interpret project drawings (SLDs, wiring diagrams, schematics).
- Understand EN and local code regulations; be conversant with local jurisdictional electrical regulations.
- (Where required) Have completed a recognised course in Verification, Testing and Certification.
- Be able to inspect, commission, and troubleshoot control systems, power circuits, and switchgear.
- Demonstrate understanding of policies and work methods for commissioning electrical equipment.
- Understand and interpret project documentation (Punchlist Procedure, As Built Procedure, Vendor Manuals).
- Perform testing (Insulation Resistance, Point to Point, grounding) with knowledge of testing equipment.
- Take live readings (Phase rotation, voltage level) and record on energisation request forms.
- Perform Live Dead Live testing as required.
- Perform panel inspections and complete ‘Pre Energisation Checklists’.
- Execute switching schedules/notes post approval from SAP and Energy Marshall.
- Perform safe energisations, isolations, and functional switching.
- Enforce the Electrical Permit to Work system (Approve/cancel/close permits relating to nominated voltage range).
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with site supervisors, peers, and vendors.
- Assist in electrical incident investigations.
- Monitor PPE and safety equipment; advise on calibration/replacement.
- (If being appointed as an MV Authorised Person) Have completed a recognised MV/HV switching course and have worked on MV systems for a minimum of three years.
- Demonstrated history of delivering HV/MV Infrastructure projects, DC / DNO / IDNO / Power Generation (If being appointed as an Authorised Person for MV, be familiar with LV infrastructure and equipment if being nominated as an Authorised Person for LV).
- Experience managing work and safety precautions across control boundaries.
- Experience performing / supervising advance cable works including phasing, testing, identifying & spiking (Spiking is a specialist skill requiring a licence in many jurisdictions, it may not be required as essential but experience of, and being conversant with the process is essential).
